There are a few reasons not to setup your own autoresponder and to rely on a hosted service instead. I just read a post at Creating an awesome home business and decided to add my own two cents. Here is what I commented

I have to agree with your points although I did not realize the implications of the can-spam act.

I write this comment because I am a tech guy and when I got started I wanted to save the $20 per month on an autoresponder and knew I could do it myself.

First of all the autoresponder took hours to set up correctly and even when I had it up and running the reporting kind of sucked.

Now that I use a professional autoresponder service, (17.95 a month)I have had my eyes opened to all of the great automation, extended services and fancy templates. Not only this but in addition I know that I am getting a lot better deliverability, who knows how bad it was when I self hosted.
