Should You Be Using Paid WordPress Themes

Paid WordPress themes are becoming more and more popular, despite the fact that there are still a huge number of free themes out there for you to try. If you’re wondering why anyone would pay when there’s so much available for free, consider these pros and cons of paying for themes.

Advantages of Using a Paid Premium WordPress theme

Remove Credit Links – Some – though not all – free themes will have footer links back to credit their original creator. This seems fair enough. After all, the designer has gone to a lot of effort to provide something completely free. But, as a user of that theme, you may feel it unprofessional to link back to certain sites. Even worse, a minority of free themes link back to random niche sites that you have no control over. Accidentally link to a site in a “bad neighborhood” and you could find yourself punished by Google.

With paid themes, you usually have the rights to remove footer credit links and avoid these issues altogether.

Continued Support – When you choose to use paid WordPress themes you’ll usually find that you’re paying for upgrades in the future. WordPress is updated so frequently that certain features on themes may stop working unless they, too, are updated. Of course, you should check to make sure how many updates you’re entitled to, and how reliable any theme creator may be before buying.

Creators of free themes still often update their work but, without the pressing issue of paid users waiting on them, it often takes a lot longer. And, in some cases, the author just loses interest or doesn’t have time to work on the theme any more.

Extra Features & Ease Of Use – A growing trend in the world of paid themes is to include an easy-to-use options area that lets you customize a number of elements of the theme. While a free theme will usually come with a couple of color options or layouts, paid themes have a huge range of features to choose from. Some of the top paid offerings let you create ad blocks on different pages, change the navigation menus, add extra sidebars, have complete control over widths, fonts, colors and more!

Boost Resale Value Of Your Site – There’s no denying the fact that, when it comes to selling your website, paid WordPress themes are perceived to be more valuable than free ones. Simply noting that you have a paid theme, and how much it would cost to buy, will help boost the final sale value should you decide to sell your website in future.

Disadvantages of Using Paid WordPress Themes

Cost – Paid themes are going to cost you, there’s no getting around it! They can cost anywhere from $30 up to $200 for some themes with a developers license. Only you can decide whether this is worth it for your business, based on the benefits of owning the theme and its features.

Looking Like Everyone Else – Just because you pay money for a theme doesn’t mean it’s going to be unique to you. In fact, some creators of paid themes market their creations so well that you may start to notice many other bloggers using the same designs as you! This is less of a problem if you use a theme with more customizable options, as many paid themes now offer.

More Features = More To Learn – It’s true that more features can mean there’s more to learn when it comes to paid WordPress themes. Although designers try to make them as newbie-friendly as possible, this isn’t always possible when you consider the huge capabilities of some of these themes. However, there will usually be extensive video tutorials and forum support to get you through just about any issue you may face.

As you can see, there really is no clear cut answer when it comes to the question of whether you should buy paid WordPress themes or not. They can be expensive, but they can also be seen as an investment that’ll pay for itself down the line. It all depends on the specific needs of your website, and your own creative vision for how you’d like it to function.

Zemanta adds content to your blog posts

Do you write dry content? I know that i have been accused of just that in the past. I just found a free Firefox plugin called Zemanta that adds a bit of a sidebar applet to your WordPress Write window that gives you one click access to adding pictures and links to articles. On a meta basis it will also add ideas for keywords and of course this may help give you more ideas for the articles and posts that you are writing in WordPress. Best of all it does all of this on the fly.

Installation of this Firefox plugin is of  course very easy. Just go to the link, download the add-on and then after Firefox is restarted you will notice nothing new until you go into write a new blog post, then Zemanta sitting is in the right hand side of your Firefox as if it was a piece of WordPress. Best WordPress plugins for Internet Marketers

wordpress plugins for internet marketersThis will be one many articles about WordPress when it comes to wordpress plugins for internet marketers. WordPress although it is a blogging platform is in reality a great way to easily add content to the internet that can not be beat for ease of use, simplicity, SEO and power for driving traffic through Web 2.0One of the most powerful aspects of WordPress is the use of plugins to add automation to the process of posting and publicizing your content on the internet. Internet marketers use a different subset of wordpress plugins for internet marketers than other bloggers do and for good reason. Here are my favorites and why.

Optimizing Blog Posts

Optimizing blog posts is an important part of your blogging. But what do you do with an older blog that is not very optimized so far? I use Google Analytics and so at times I will check through my stats only looking at some of my worst performing pages, you know some of your pages will get 100 or more visits a day but other pages get 0nly, maybe 1 pageview a week.

I set up my Google Analytics view so that I could see the number of pageviews over the last week and then scrolled way down to the bottom and for all the posts that had one view (some of them anyway) I went into my WordPress editor and looked at the optimizing blog posts.

These are the questions that I asked.

  • What is the page about? – is the title obvious to the content?
  • What are the keywords that this post should have? – If Google does not know what my pages is about how are they going to rank it?
  • Is there any post structure? – Header tags and images to break up the content and make the post more interesting looking to readers
  • Is the topic interesting? – I may think the topic is interesting and useful to my readers but if they get bored after the first paragraph then I have failed them.
  • What can I add in content to fill out the idea that the post is about? – Is there anything missing that should be included in the post that I may have missed the first time through?
  • Can I add subheadings to the post itself – This is also part of the optimization process making sure the headings are relevant and keyword rich

Optimizing Blog Posts and Fixing Them

Optimizing Blog Posts

Optimizing Blog Posts

I would quickly analyze and then fix the page and save. Each page probably took about 5 minutes or so because the structure in the first place was already there. In some cases I did do a lot of rewriting of the content.

In one case I actually liked the new content enough that I changed the date of the post and made it my new post for the day…nice having content that goes back a couple or three years, most of my visitors had not seen this content ever.

Busy couple of weeks so far fixing my blogs and optimizing. I have also been posting up a storm over the last couple of days but still have not been adding many affiliate links like I should be.

Using this process you can go in and fix each post in very short order. I think that most marketers as well as writing a few blog posts a week, you should also spend some time each week optimizing blog posts

More WordPress Blog SEO

Well yesterday I finished off a weekend long process of optimizing my wordpress blog SEO.

First of all, this weekend I only worried about on page optimizing as I have less control over off page optimizing although I am always looking for more links to my good pages.

WordPress Blog SEO to watch

Wordpress Blog SEO

WordPress Blog SEO

So yesterday afternoon and last night I looked at every one of my review pages and optimized a few things

Page TitleWordPress blog SEO starts with the Title, which should be an H1 header has two ways that it makes a page title, the post slug, which is the name of the URL, the .html of the page and the page title itself. If you change the URL then all of your links into your page will be broken – not good. I did however optimize the page titles to include only or almost only the keywords that I wanted to optimize for.

Header tags – I have all of my post use the page title as a <H1> tag. I also tried to break up text to use the <H2> and in some cases <H3> tags. This makes the page more readable and better for the visitor as well as telling search engines what is important about your pages.

Keyword density – I know that this is a tough one. I found that i was not using the keywords that I was optimizing for on each of my review pages, sometimes not at all. I added some keyword density to all of the pages.

Page Load Time - I try to get the page load time lower than it is now. We need to have a fast loading page for our visitors and search engines sake.

Get Rid of Uselesss Widgets - There are widgets that interlink and widgets that are not helping us. You want to use plugins like YARPP or other related posts plugins and turf those ego building plugins that don’t serve anyone and only slow things down.

Cleaning up reviews – Some of the reviews were a little messy and I tried to make them cleaner and flow better. Optimizing for the end user not the search engines in this case

Although this last item is not entirely a wordpress blog seo subject it is still really important. I find that when I write a review page I just right what makes sense. I start a review with some kind of intro or even a problem that I ran into, a solution and then how the product gives the solution. I am sure I sould do a better job on my review pages but this weekend was all about more pageviews. I should not be ranking higher over the next few days for some keywords late in the buying cycle, the usually means the product names as people are starting to research individual products and know what they are looking for. They just have to find a concise review and a little push.

If you remember I wrote on Saturday how I fixed the rest of my page issues with WordPress plugins and stuff and now I am back in the saddle just writing more content everywhere. I don’t want to touch any SEO for a while again as there is a point where you are working for hours to squeeze only a little more effectiveness instead for putting up good content to reach more visitors.

So remember WordPress blog SEO may not be the only thing that matters but after creating content it is an easy second.

WordPress 2.5

I am not sure how I missed this yesterday but WordPress has been updated to version 2.5. The new version of wordpress adds lots of new features but is a real departure from what you are used to.

As an internet marketer you may want to wait until next weekend or a slow night this week sometime so that you can upgrade and get used to the interface. The last thing that you want to do is upgrade and have to take a hit on your productivity or suffer with nonworking plugins.

After you try it out let me know what you think. New streamlined interface, picture galleries within posts…what else do you like.

Building the web with WordPress

I started out building websites back in about 1998 I guess, with Microsoft Publisher, and although things have changed a lot since those days I still find the process of building a website interesting and exciting. I almost never open Microsoft Publsiher anymore unless it is to make a tag for my wifes scrapbooking projects and I now have settled on WordPress.

The move from just static sites to blogs took a while but a few years ago I started a couple of blogger blogs and then moved up to my own Movable Type installation and now I have transferred almost everything to WordPress. WordPress to me is fantastic because the software gives me options that would take years for me to develop myself.

You don’t believe me? Well here is a list of why WordPress is king:

1. Easy to install – I have installed WordPress a few times and all I need is hosting, a MySQL database (included with my hosting) FTP access and a web browser to do the click click click thing. No problems and it works all the time as long as the host is stable.

2. Lots of themes – No matter what kind of look that you want for your site, someone has created that look as a wordpress theme, just download, unzip, upload and select

3. Lots of plugins – There are plugins for everything from autoblogging to RSS and tagging and I am finding more and  more useful WordPress plugins everyday. I search Google and find what I need.

4. Consistency and process flow – If I find a new extension or a new SEO method that I can use or even a new theme (as I did with Manidog that i use here), I can quickly go through all of my blogs and add that change easily to all of them at once. I set up a little process flow and 10 minutes later I am done. I even use a little process to upgrade WordPress itself when I upgrade and this way nothing is ever missed.

Since everything is in WordPress and my Firefox has links to all of my blogs it is very easy for me to add content when it is time for that and to update and upgrade when it is time for that and the two never have to meet. If I find something great to post I just post it and move on. There are no HTML tags to worry about and no uploading process so the new content is a thought and a click and that allows me to be a lot more creative.

Web hosted or self hosting for your blogs

Creating your blogs

Now that you have hopefully found yourself a niche it is time to look at how you are going to set up your blog. The choices of places to get a blog are almost endless as the blogging boom of the last few years has given everyone a chance to start a blog easily and for free.

There are two choices of a platform for hosting a blog. You can either have a blog that you control on your server or you can use a service on the internet that hosts your blog for you. The choice is up to you but of course I have my own opinion of what is the best way.

Self Hosted Blog
A self hosted blog is one where you get web space and then add your blog to that web space. I do not want to get into the details of who to use for this exactly but for probably about $10 per month you can get  a package that will include Linux web space and a MySQL server. Are you a techy? If so great and if not it is a very easy process of uploading files and following some directions. I used Movable Type in this way for years now and have recently moved to WordPress for the majority of my blogs. Although there is a learning curve here and a chance that you will bog yourself down in the fun techy stuff this is easily the most powerful option.

Web Hosted Blog
Well the next choice for a blog is to use a service that does this hosting for you and you are just up and running sometimes in only a few seconds. You have probably seen web hosted blogs like blogger or wordpress.com sites and these sites are easy and free to set up. There is nothing much to say about complexity of these services, most will allow you to add your own affiliate or even adsense links and even change the look and feel of your blog including uploading pictures or videos with your content,  but will of course not give you the control that a self hosted blog can have. The real advantage of this though is convenience. One thing that I believe though that is really important is to make sure that oyu go the extra mile and get you domain. Nothing looks cheaper than a domain called “mymoneymakingsite.blogspot.com” and a hotmail address to contact you. Most services will allow you to buy a domain from them and host it and this should not cost oyu more than a few dollars a month at most.

Conclusion
So which way to go to host your blog? Well I know that I started out by using blogger.com and it worked out for me quite well and gave me a taste of the excitement of instant web publishing but eventually once I had a good feel for what it takes to get a blog that I hosted and have control over I moved almost everything over to that route. I believe that his is a good practice as you start. The most important thing about blogging is not the control over the blog that you have but the content that you create and how that content will bring visitors to your offers that you are hoping to make money from.

Multi pronged Marketing Attack

Marketing on the Internet won’t be the same for any two businesses because all businesses have their own set of unique goals to achieve. With this understanding you can appreciate why detailed planning and design is a vital first step to launching a successful online campaign.

Crafting a detailed plan and monitoring the results will allow you to develop a strategy that fits your company’s needs and budget, chart the progress and measure the return on investment (ROI). Having a strategy in place will also moderate risk and the lessen cost over time.

While developing the strategy, you’ll want to consider the following important points:

Demographic -Who is your audience?

Once you identify your audience you can establish the best way to reach them online.

Budget – How much do you have to spend?

Your budget will largely depend on how important the Internet is to your service or product’s success. Prioritize your budget always looking forward and continue to expand your marketing plan as your revenue increases.

Execution – What if your marketing plan is bigger than your budget?

Consider executing a few strategies at a time. If your budget does not allow for you to follow through with the entire plan at this time follow through with only one or two objectives. This will allow you to stay within your budget while taking a few steps toward your ultimate goal.

Search Engine Detection

Launching your website is only one step in several that it will take to make your business visible on the World Wide Web. There are billions of websites on the Internet, so you can see why it’s crucial to determine how people can specifically find your business.

The majority of website traffic comes from search engines and directories and this is why you will want to focus your initial marketing strategies on search engine optimization. Google and Yahoo index billions of web pages and rank them according to complex algorithms. For this reason it is vitally important to create a content rich website. Make your content relevant based on the specific search terms you believe best describe your service or product. Search engine optimization (SEO) consists of a series of techniques woven into the coding of the website. SEO is not an exact science. SEO specialists typically employ numerous and assorted methods to attain search engine recognition to achieve the best possible ranking for your business.

Below are a few simple tips to keep in mind before you start.

  • Use “search engine friendly” coding methods such as adding descriptive search terms to your images.
  • Research search terms and search term phrases that is appropriate for your service or products.
  • Implement search term-rich content into your website
  • The website title and description should reflect your most relevant search terms.
  • Submit your website to the search engines.
  • Incorporate inbound links.
  • Encourage interaction by including “share this” buttons.

Social Media – What It Means To You

Social media lets you communicate in a more casual environment. You can use this opportunity to alert clients and prospective clients to new products and services and even offer special discounts if they take action by a specific date. Participating in social mediums also allows you the opportunity to network and establish yourself as an expert in your industry. Now I can go on giving you examples and continue to show you the advantages of using social media in your daily marketing however, it really just boils down to this: This is where everyone is at and you have to decide if you’re going to wait at your house for the party to show up or walk down the street and join the one already in progress. That said include your company in as many interactive and social opportunities as possible.

The Boomerang Effect

The boomerang effect stated simply means that anything you do should draw people back to your website. A blog can serve as an excellent boomerang. Once you write your post you can drop headlines on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, etc with a call to finish the article, see the product in action, get an instant quote or consultation. Your daily emails should include a call to action just under your signature pointing the reader back to your website. Be creative and think about all the places you’ve overlooked where you can place a call to action and draw people back to your website.

Blogging with WordPress

Once you have your blog set up and you’re ready to post you’ll want to make sure your new blog posts get recognized immediately each time you add new content to your blog. For this to happen you’ll need to setup a ping list. Adding a ping list to WordPress is probably the single best way to optimize your blog so you’ll want to build a lengthy ping directory to ensure you’re alerting as many ping lists as possible who in turn will notify Google, Yahoo, the news sites, many global sites and numerous other directories.

Now by default WordPress includes a handful of sites to ping every time you add a new post but I recommend performing periodic searches to find the most extensive set of ping directories you can. Then add your new ping list by logging into WordPress through admin and on the left side click on “settings” then go to “writing” once you’ve clicked “writing” go to the bottom of the page and under “update services” you’ll find the box where you can add your new ping list and save the changes. Once that’s done you should be on your way to sharing your blog with the world.
