There are many kinds of businesses that you can start on the internet. As I have surfed around I can tell you what I have seen today.
Content organizing - This is a tough one. Look at Google and what they have done in indexing all of the internet’s web pages. This is probably a business model but who would really have the resources in this day and age to go after Google or Yahoo. although there have been challengers within niches such as Technorati.
User based applications - Here is another business model that is very large and difficult to enter. If you look at a company like Wordpress or Delicious. This kind of business tends to have a solution for people and since it is usually a broad solution it is a very difficult business to get into unless you are a developer, have access to developers and access to a lot of money for the server infrastructure to make is work. This though is one of those methods that leads to multi million dollar buyouts.
Sales enhancement - Best name I could come up with. This is where you as a website owner add value to a product or niche. Lets say that you find a book that you really like, or in this case lots of books. You can write review for the books that sell through Amazon.com or Clickbank and get a bit of a kickback for every book sold. this is a decent business to get into if you are able to carve out your own piece of the internet and be the affiliate salesperson for those products. This is what I am mostly involved in through a few sites that I own. Don’t look to tightly at the book example as no one says that you can not sell physical products and this is done quite a bit through EBay
Product creation - Can you write a book, or create a product of your own? If so you have two routes. You can sell a book that you write yourself directly or you can have it sold by affiliates as I mentioned above, or both. This is a great business model as whatever you create can be sold using a giant salesforce on the internet. This is where there are a lot of people looking to sell you products though, good or bad to help you create your information products.
Adsense - I will call this adsense although there are a lot of companies that have cropped uop in the last couple of years that do the same service. You slap together some content on a website, put up advertising and then you get paid for everyone that clicks on the add. This is very popular these days and is a tough way to make money. for everyone that clicks an add you get anywhere from one cent to 10 dollars (usually closer to ten cents). This is tough as you need to get lots of traffic to your site to get lots of clicks on your ads. Again there are a lot of products out there showing you how to make a ton of money with this method although most are just the same info over and over.
I hope this gives you a bit of an overview of how you can make money on the internet. As you look at ways that people monetize their websites you will see that most people use more than one method which is great.
The next subject that I want to tackle is niche marketing. This is how to decide what you want kind of content site that you would want to put up.
