Well the fallout is continuing over the Google Algorithm changes Penguin and Panda that seem to keep pushing and changing all of our rankings.
I wanted to talk a bit about this as well as what you can do about it if you have been hit hard.
If you feel like I have been a bit of a slacker lately you are not alone. My traffic to my biggest site has dropped about 20 -25% according to Google Analytics over the last couple of years but I have taken a lot of steps to change this.
And I blame the Google Algorithm changes for all of that as my traffic has been steadily rising lately.
What to do about Google Algorithm changes
Well once I got over my sadness about my traffic I knew that there was no choice but to take some action and I am writing this blog post as just a bit of a break against making the changes listed below and they are definitely important changes.
Remember always that in the absence of pressure peoiple will shortcut and now with Google getting serious about crap content there is a flight to quality, so my changes are all about quality.
Optimize Titles and Content – I have been going post by post and updating my articles (over 2000 so it will take ages) and trying to make sure that Google knows what my article is about. I use common sense to make sure that the titles and keyword density are good so that at least I am going after some kind of keyword.
Optimize Head tags and images – I use the SEOpressor plugin and it reminds me about keyword density as well as doing some alterations but most important it gives you a checklist, Do I have H2 and H3 tags? Do I have an image and does it have my keyword?
SEO Plugins – I use the Genesis WordPress theme for all my blogs and it has SEO built right in. I have decided instead to have more control by using Joost De Valk’s WordPress SEO plugin as it seems to be better that All-in-one seo that I have used in the past (I have a whole post about that coming too).
Cleaning up or deleting crap content – Have not started this but it will have to happen. Remember if you have spun, or crap that you have scraped then it is not content that Google is interested in. I look at this as a site based problem and Google could really penalize a site when it looks at the number of bad articles. I am striving on just fixing for now and not culling content.
Improving Backlink quality – Extrapolate out for a minuste at what is happening with your backlinks. I have done a lot of social bookmarking and article writing over the years and if Google has been lowering the value of the content on those sites it definitely is doing the same with the value of backlinks from those sites. So everyone is affected that uses this strategy. The real content sites like YouTube should be safe. I am going to watch the SEO blogs over the next few days to see what I can use for backlinks by what has been affected least.
I Am Spending the Week Optimizing, How about You?
I think as I go through this week all of my blogs and all the content will be improving. There are still problems that Google must struggle with, like really seeing what spun content looks like in an algorithm but I don’t spin so I should be ahead of that next shoe to drop.
It looks like my lazy days are over for a while and my word counts are going to be way up. So my Advice to anyone being hit by these changes is to do what I have been doing.
The flight to quality on the web is definitely in full force and any scraped or syndicated content as well as Autoblogs seems to be in trouble. We will all be watching the Google Algorithm changes next year as we have this year as well as blogs, and my traffic for me, to see how this plays out.
